LEGO designer reveals secret behind new Monkie Kid set

The creator of the LEGO Monkie Kid theme has revealed how the design team was inspired by a video game for one of this summer’s sets.

Three new Monkie Kid models are due to launch on July 1, including 80025 Sandy’s Power Loader Mech, 80026 Pigsy’s Noodle Tank and 80028 The Bone Demon. The latter of that trio has already set a new record for the LEGO Group in the number of glow-in-the-dark elements it contains, but that’s not the only reason it’s shaping up to be the most exciting of the three sets.

That’s because Simon Lucas – Senior Creative Director at the LEGO Group, co-creator of NINJAGO and the brains behind Monkie Kid – has now revealed how the design team took cues from a video game to put together 80028 The Bone Demon.

“[LEGO designer Justin Ramsden] and I really tried to make the building journey part of the play,” Simon explained on Twitter. “Like a video game, there’s a battle at each level, and in the end you face the big boss.”

You can see that approach take shape purely from the official set images, which demonstrate how the larger model can split into multiple smaller builds to face off against Monkie Kid and Mei. But if you’d like to experience the actual process of assembling those models for yourself – and watching them combine into the ‘big boss’ – you’ll be able to do so from July 1, when 80028 The Bone Demon launches at LEGO.com.
